Why this matters
Through our SHIFT assessments, we’ve found that new build homes still have some distance to go before they can be considered truly sustainable. Our scoring system evaluates:
-
-
- The number of sustainable features in a home
- How effectively those features are managed
-
Out of a maximum score of 15, here’s how the last 40 organisations we assessed performed:
The results clearly show that there’s room for improvement. We understand that development teams are already stretched, and we’re not looking to create extra burdens.
The good news? Most of the processes needed to build truly sustainable homes already exist. They just need a few thoughtful adjustments to be more effective and meaningful.
Our proposed Environmental Quality Management System (EQMS)
We’ve developed a practical approach which we call an Environmental Quality Management System (EQMS) that can help you:
-
-
- Deliver more sustainable, low running-cost homes for residents
- Capture useful insights to guide future developments
- Reduce costs (e.g., fewer snagging issues, less retrofitting)
- Easily collect data for environmental reports (SECR, ESG, etc.)
- Gather sustainability data for asset management
-
We’ve shared this approach with a few landlords already—and the feedback has been very encouraging. Now, we’re inviting more voices to help shape this idea.
