Sustainability is no longer a specialist topic for housing associations — it is central to how we manage homes, support residents and plan for the future. From net zero targets and climate resilience to water use, overheating, biodiversity and sustainable transport, staff across every part of an organisation need the confidence to understand the issues and talk about them clearly.
That is why we recently designed and delivered a fun, practical and interactive sustainability awareness session. The aim was simple: give staff the knowledge, language and tools they need to make sustainability feel relevant to their day-to-day roles — and to help them support residents with more confidence.
What the session covered
At the heart of the session, we explored individual addresses using national databases for home energy efficiency and flood risk. This gave delegates practical, personalised insights while highlighting the range of sustainability challenges that different households may face. It also introduced a little friendly competition between delegates.

- biodiversity and green spaces
- an interactive quiz to reinforce learning and prompt discussion
Making sustainability relevant for every role
One of the strengths of the session was its focus on real-world housing scenarios. Rather than presenting sustainability as a distant strategic ambition, we explored what it means for asset management, resident engagement, repairs, neighbourhoods and everyday decision-making. Staff were encouraged to ask questions, share experiences and think about how small changes in knowledge and behaviour can contribute to bigger organisational goals.
By the end of the session, participants had a clearer understanding of the challenges facing housing providers — and a set of practical ideas they could apply both at work and at home.
