Why we exist
At its core, SHIFT Environment exists for one reason: to drive real environmental improvements through meaningful environmental reporting.
Reporting shouldn’t just be a box-ticking exercise. Whether we’re delivering environmental benchmarking, compliance reporting, or property-level energy audits, our aim is always the same — to turn insight into action. And time and again, we see that our reports do exactly that.
Here are just a few examples of how reporting has translated into real change:
- Benchmarking has highlighted underperforming heat networks, prompting clients to invest in targeted energy efficiency upgrades.
- ESOS reporting, often approached initially as a compliance obligation, has gone on to catalyse genuine energy efficiency improvements once opportunities were clearly identified.
- Energy audits regularly lead to practical action — from quick wins like switching off heating during unoccupied periods, to longer-term investments such as installing solar PV.
Backed by data, not just anecdotes
Anecdotes are useful, but evidence matters more. That’s why impact is built directly into our quality assurance process. After every project, we ask clients a simple but telling question:
“On a scale of 0–10, how much has — or will — the project completed with SHIFT contribute towards environmental improvements in your organisation?”
(0 = no influence, 10 = fundamental to improvements)
We track these responses monthly. The results below from 2025 show a consistent average score of over 7 out of 10, a strong indicator that our work is genuinely influencing environmental decision-making.

This aligns with wider evidence too. A recent Government review of SECR compliance reporting — an area we work in extensively — shows that SECR is, overall, having a positive impact on emissions reduction [1].
What our clients say
The data tells one part of the story. Our clients tell the rest. Here’s a selection of recent testimonials that reinforce what the numbers already show — that well-designed environmental reporting doesn’t just inform, it enables action.
“The SHIFT Sustainability report provides us with an invaluable, evidence-based overview of our environmental performance. It gives us not only a clear understanding of our current footprint, but also a strategic pathway towards measurable, long-term improvements. Our knowledgeable assessor Steve was always available to help throughout, and produced a great, timely report.” Molly Auchterlonie – Environmental and Sustainability Business Partner – Finance, Stonewater – August 2025
‘‘SHIFT were a brilliant partner for our ESOS compliance and the reports have provided valuable insight. The process was thorough, clearly presented, and tailored to our needs. Our SHIFT Assessor, Steve, was always available to provide help and advice throughout the process. Thank you.’’ Emma Detain – Sustainability Manager, Huel – December 2025
“Thanks, Millie, for all your help with the SECR report. It’s been great working together to understand the data we have and where to report these emissions. This report is very useful, as it shows the breakdown of carbon emissions and identifies current improvements from the previous year and further areas for improvement. This data is extremely valuable to Cobalt, and will help us demonstrate our ESG performance to relevant stakeholders, as well as direct our operations as we race to achieve Net Zero.” James Fay – Sustainability Officer, Cobalt Housing – October 2025
