Chilworth Manor Vineyard and sustainable wine SHIFT Environment are known for our specialism in social housing. We also do work outside of that sector and here is one example. We recently worked with Chilworth Manor Vineyard to measure the embodied carbon footprint of their newly completed tasting barn. This post-construction analysis provided detailed insights into the carbon emissions from material production and delivery. Sir Graham Wrigley, owner of Chilworth Manor, expressed gratitude for the collaboration, saying, “This report has been invaluable in helping us measure and understand our environmental impact.” Here’s a little bit more about the vineyard and their work. Sustainable practices at Chilworth Manor Vineyard Chilworth Manor Vineyard is deeply committed to sustainable practices:
- Membership of sustainable wines of Great Britain: As members, they pledge to reduce their carbon footprint, enhance biodiversity, and use water responsibly.
- Morning vine misting Frost Protection: This innovative practice helps protect vines from frost damage with a nature based solution.
- Solar-powered operations: Part of the vineyard’s electricity is generated by an extensive array of solar panels, ensuring renewable energy powers their activities.
- Rainwater harvesting: Water used in crop management is collected as rainwater run-off through field drainage systems, reducing reliance on external water sources. This is also used to “fertigate” – a practise to apply nutrients though the water pipes for the Frost Protection System to reduce tractor usage and increase precision use of nutrients.
- Phasing out herbicides: One major goal has always been to phase out the use of herbicides. The vineyard has introduced a mechanical hoe to manage weeds under the vines while maintaining grass cover between rows and around the headlands. This not only helps minimise soil erosion but also encourages beneficial insect populations.
These practices highlight Chilworth Manor’s holistic approach to sustainability. Embodied carbon insights SHIFT’s advice and report guided Chilworth Manor Vineyards efforts on material choices to avoid 62.92 tonnes CO2e. This demonstrates the importance of material choices in sustainable construction.
